Definition
The Codeable Concept model provides a standardised cross-reference between EMIS clinical codes and established coding systems, mapping each code to its corresponding SNOMED CT concept and Read v2 equivalent where available.
It enables consistent interpretation and analysis of coded clinical data across different coding systems and healthcare applications.
Information
Section titled “Information”The Codeable Concept model acts as a terminology bridge, linking proprietary EMIS code identifiers to industry-standard coding systems.
For each EMIS code, it consolidates the SNOMED CT concept ID, SNOMED CT description ID, and fully specified name, alongside the Read v2 code where a mapping exists. This allows downstream consumers to work with clinically coded data in a coding-system-agnostic way, supporting interoperability, reporting, and enrichment use cases.
Grain and Scope
Section titled “Grain and Scope”Each row is a unique codeable concept record and each record is uniquely identified by code_id column.
This model includes the following key identifiers:
- code_id: The unique EMIS identifier for the clinical code.
The following fields are important for tracking data lineage and freshness:
-
is_deleted: Indicates whether the codeable concept record has been deleted at source.
-
transform_datetime: The timestamp indicating when the record was last processed and updated in the data model. This field is crucial for understanding the current state of the data.
Things to be aware of
Section titled “Things to be aware of”- Codeable Concept Mapping Updates: Mappings from code ids to SNOMED CT and Read codes can change over time; EMIS MKB is updated monthly and may include relevant code updates, with more changes expected when releases coincide with NHS SNOMED CT updates.
- Codeable Concept only includes codes that have a SNOMED CT mapping. This differs from clinical code model which includes codes without a SNOMED CT mapping.
